epoxy coating on drive shaft spline problem 900

I took apart the drive shaft on my daughters 1994, 940 wagon (non-turbo). it came apart easy. However, it was hell putting the spline on rear shaft back in to the from front shaft. the rear spline appears to be coated with a thin coating of expoxy. I found a spot where I could put the spline in about 2/3's the way by hand. Had to pound it in the rest of the way. Yes, I cleaned both parts, no grit or other stuff left. What is going on and how can I make the process easier next time?
