Manual Sunroof Question 744 700

1989 744

I've had this 744 for 4 years (and it's been in the family since new), and have never had a leak, but after using and stowing it yesterday, it leaked for the first time after being parked in the rain today.

I read the FAQs and reviewed about 100 threads via a search, but none seem to address what I have.

No rust-ZERO anywhere on the car or roof area. The seal "looks" good with no obvious defects or gaps, and the sunroof appears really "tight" in the roof opening.

No water came in until I drove the car slightly downhill, at which point water poured in around the SUNROOF CRANK assembly. Some also came in along teh side between the sunroof headliner and the vehicle headliner. The water had obviously accumulated while sitting in the rain for a few hours. Until I moved the car NO water was evident anywhere-the headliner and below (seats/console) were perfectly dry.

I moved and parked the car in my carport on the level, and opened the sunroof expecting to find water around the edges of the sunroof in the channel where the drains are located.

Strangely, there was no water to speak of in there (it was wet, but below the level of the drains and tubes, indicating they are draining), but there WAS water inboard of the track area where it could come down onto the sunroof headliner. The raised track portion inboard of the drain areas LOOKS like it should keep water from running in around the inner edges of the sunroof. The front tubes are clear. See question about the rear ones below.

The front edge of my sunroof is about 1/8" or 3/16" LOWER than the roof when parked in the closed position, allowing water to pool in there, but it's never leaked INSIDE before. I would like to RAISE the front lip in the closed position to "flush" in any event as it should keep the drains from being challenged, but not sure how to do that.

The crank mechanism works fine, and the slide-back, and tip-up functions work perfectly, BTW.

So my questions are:

1) How does water get over the raised hump that comprises the sunroof track unless the tubes are clogged? I have checked the front tubes, and understand the rear tubes go into the trunk? They cannot drain INTO the trunk, and I read one can use a shop-vac to blow them out from the bottom, but where do they actually terminate to put the vacuum hose?

2) How exactly does one adjust the height of the FRONT edge of the sunroof panel higher? The rear is perfect.

3) I read that with the rear sunroof tipped up, one can see two clips that retain the inside headliner panel to the sunroof panel, which allows the headliner to be slid aft independent of the metal sunroof. Too dark in the carport today to see these, but where exactly are the clips located?

4) I didn't see instructions in the FAQs on how to actually remove the sunroof panel to replace the outer seal. Is it possible to remove the panel and replace the seal w/o messing up the "timing" of the sunroof assembly?

While I'd LOVE to have a working sunroof, this is a "second car" so I could live if it didn't, but leaking is not a good deal!

To make it easy to read, please feel free to copy-and-paste my post into any reply, and simply type answers after each question in my text if that works for you.

Thanks for any ideas-
Bob
