Intermittent Drivability Issues 200 1992

So, the '92 wagon's been pretty faithful these past few months. however, now she's developed a drivability issue that's quite unnerving to the Young Princess who's taking it to school. Seems that:

1. Sometimes, on start-up, the car will rev up-and-down, by itself and will continue to do so until she shuts it off. On re-start, it idles perfectly normally.

2. She'll be driving along perfectly well, and, so long as she keeps the revs up (like driving on the freeway)car runs fine. Reverting to the surface streets, engine warm, and in stop-and-go traffic, car begins to act like it won't take any fuel when pressing on the accelerator. Press the pedal, and it's as though car is likely to stall. Stomping on the gas sometimes will allow the car to 'get over the hump' so to speak and continue on. However, back down to idle, and it acts the same way. 80% of the time, shutting it off and re-starting it will clear the problem....until the next time, which could be days, hours or just a few minutes.

3. According to her, these problems occur with no pattern or predictability. I'm guessing that they're lessened when the air is cooler, or the engine isn't hot from spirited driving.

But the entire scene....problems with the car coupled with an unhappy Princess is maddening.

I thought Idle Air Controller for the revs at start-up....but the drivability issues, as intermittent as they are, have me stumped.

Anybody?
