shifter lock-release problem: 1991 240 automatic 200 1991

The shifter on my 1991 240 auto trans sometimes will not move from the "Park" position. After serveral tries I was able to put my finger thru the shifter "brush" on the console and move the lock release. What's the fix and can the shifter lock mechanism be disabled? If so, are there consequences for disabling it? Thanks for any suggestions.
