The AW70 transmission in my 1990 240 is whining when I slow to a stop. I first noticed it on cold mornings about a year ago: it would whine for the first few minutes of driving, then it was fine. The noise was not present for the whole (Australian) summer, but now it's back. This morning was the coldest so far this year -- it was 10 degrees C (50 degrees F), and the whining was quite pronounced, and didn't go away when the trans warmed up. It's higher in pitch at higher speed. I can't tell for certain if it's still there when traveling over about 20mph. It goes away if I shift into neutral, and is not there in D at a standstill. Is it time to start saving for a good used transmission?, or is it likely to be something simple (a bearing?).
