We all know it eats $$$ out of our pockets to keep our bricks running. For those of us who depend on their bricks as a daily driver, that can really add up. Then there’s those of us who not only put out the bucks to keep it running, but do take that extra ‘care”, a paint job occasionally, the best of tires, using only the best parts, like Bosch-Volvo-Mann--upgrades..etc...
It's been my trek to keep our brick in top shape, mechanically and cosmetically. Its our only car and I guess I’ve gotten to be a fanatic about keeping the brick healthy.
I have argued that we could buy a new car for the $$$ we put out on it for my way of upkeep, but she argues that even if we spend $500-$1000 (at times) a year its cheaper than those monthly payments and upkeep on a new car.
Fortunately there have been some years where the upkeep has been negligible. It's been 10 years since we laid out the $$$ for our present brick-'89 DL wagon. Ive added upgrades, made improvments. Kept it shining.
I think she’s right, at least to a point. Once we have to replace or repair an engine , I donno about that. Even a new car needs upkeep. The interest and insurance can add up. The warranty requirements have to be met.
Do I wish we could have both? A new car AND the brick?? I used to answer “yes” but now, I donno. If we went for a new car it would most likely be a dependable gas saver, maybe along the lines of a Prius. Worth it? Again, I don’t know.
What I do know, is we keep the brick for now, tend to its needs . So far, so good. Your thoughts?
