fuel guage is suddenly inaccurate 700

last month when i was fooling with my speedometer, i managed to offset my fuel guage needle. since i had just filled up and knew my tank was full, i just reset it. now it needle shows i have a 1/4 tank left(4 & some change gallons), but the low-level light is on. in the past it hasnt come on til i have about 2 gallons left. is it the light or the pointer that doesnt work right? i suppose i could run smooth out and reset the pointer to empty. any thoughts?
