Thought I would post this so maybe I can either help someone avoid my mistake or at least diagnose it more quickly.

At Christmas, I rebuilt the front suspension on the 92 940 my college daughter drives. Upon completion, it had a slight clunk that sounded like the gland nut wasn't tight enough (strut cartridge slightly loose) but I checked and couldn't get it any tighter. Reading threads on the topic had me thinking I might need to add a washer to tighten it up. Ran out of time and sent her off.

The semester is over and she is home now so I took another close look at the gland nut. Bear with me as I try to explain what I found. I had used the Boge replacement gland nuts and they are made so the flat surface of the nut is bent to wrap around to the side and this is the contact point for a pipe wrench or channel locks when tightening. They are designed so that there is enough space for the bent over part to go down around the strut mount tube. I had apparently applied enough gripping force with my channel locks to bend this part in so that it was hitting the top of the strut mount tube before it was fully seated. Hence, the loose gland nut clunk. I pulled it apart, mounted a new gland nut, and no more clunk.

Glad to have that fixed but more care at the start could have avoided the problem altogether.
