I have a 1969 164, auto trans., K-cam, dual 175CD Strombergs. The car runs great after a 2009 rebuild and even then it had only 25K original miles. Recently it's begun to backfire on heavy pedal acceleration. I suspected the damper oil and went to a heavier grade (15W-40 and also 20W-50) which seemed to help
for a while. But it didn't stop the problem. My mechanic suspected the o-rings in the carbs. After inspection, he saw there were none in these carbs. I think my set, which were on the car when I bought it in 2001, is an earlier version that was probably improved on. Am I correct? Neither carb has a number tag attached. The car never did this in 12 years.
Btw, The fuel pump was recently replaced by one from VP Autoparts so it should not be one of those fakes on ebay. I hope.
Tomorrow we'll look a little closer at it.
Any opinions?
Thanks.
