1987 240 over heating erraticly and no pressure in coolant resevoir

Hello all,
Just bought an 87 b230F saloon, among the little issues with this car is one that is more concerning to me than the rest. Today i had it out on a long highway drive and occasionally i would notice the temp needle getting higher than normal, approximately 3/4 of the way to the red. IT happened once while on the highway while going up a hill in 4th gear, and i noticed it again when i was back in the city, its almost as if the temp is directly affected by engine rpm. When i parked, i checked the coolant level, as i removed the cap expecting to hear the hiss of pressurized coolant, i was able to get it completely off without any sign of there being pressure in the system and upon looking inside the resevoir it looks as if the coolant has been sitting stagnant in the reservoir. I also took a look at the water pump which i was replaced within the last year ( have receipt for the repair from p.o. )it looks as if it is a little wet around the junction to the block and the big hose on the passenger side of the pump has some electrical tape on it near where it connects to the pump. Any ideas on what the problem is here? im not very experienced with cooling systems and any help would be much appreciated.

-Thnks all
