Fuel Pressure Regulator (an observation) 700 1989

I did all sorts of things to make sure my FPR was good - vacuum leak checks and all of that. Then I failed emissions with high CO. Also, my exhaust pipe was sooting up.

As I was fiddling around with the vacuum line off the FPR and revving the RPM's I noticed out of the corner of my eye a slight dribble coming out of the open vacuum port of the FPR.

Sure enough, the diaphragm had sprung a tiny leak that wasn't readily detectable with normal troubleshooting techniques. I'm guessing that this lets excess fuel into the manifold which doesn't burn completely and causes the sooting in the tail pipe and high CO.

Does this ring true with anyone? I'll post back when I pass that pesky safety check.
