disconnecting stearing u joint at pinion? 200 1987

Trying to get ready to install a reman rack and pinion on Wednesday. Trying to follow the pictures and description in the Haynes 240 book.
Where exactly is the disconnection point of the steering shaft? They say loosen and remove bolt at pinch connection betweeen the pinion and the u joint. But there is more than one u joint. Is it the aluminum u joint down lower, or is the one up near the firewall?
