crank pulley and a broken timing belt 200

Someone didn't change the timing belt on his 1988 240, 5 speed and it broke this morning. The last time I replaced it it was intact and I didn't have any problems changing it. Will not having the belt on affect the removal of the crank pulley? Thanks in advance!
