testing main fuel pump 200

hello sages- two years ago my 92 245 ran sluggish as hell. shysters at dealer said $1000 to test and repair. suspected larceny at dealer and fuel delivery problem in 245. instead called on the forum here. told to check pumps took cap off tank and put my ear next to it while a partner switched ignition to on. heard an audible click or clunk but no whirring as if intank fuel pump was healthy. took out rear deck panel to access tank fuel pump hole on top of rear hump and replaced pump sock and sending unit. worked fine and since. bench tested old pump and it clicked and clunked. parts cost about 200 at carquest. parts from germany. question today is how to check the main pump . figure its the same test ; get under car find main pump and have partner turn ignition switch to on. listen for whirring from that pump. guessing if that pump had crapped out there would be no sound or just a click and clunk ,but if that pump was nfg, car would not start because it has to generate more pull and pressure to run engine. am i right. alternative plan is to replace fuel filter. heard that job can be hellacious. oh- symptom now is occassional drop in rpm at idle which always recovers without stalling. comments? thanks tons oldduke
