945 Turbo--Octane and Lucas Fuel Treatment

Hey All

Recently I bought a very cherry 91 945 Turbo with 157K. Enjoying it very much, great car, except that the mileage was even lower than I expected. Using premium fuel, I was getting 18-19 in mixed driving, and 21-22 freeway driving.

I decided to try regular fuel to see if that would make a difference, based on some previous posts on this site. Never again! While the car sounded and performed fine, my mileage in mixed driving slipped all the way to 15.5!

So I went into research mode and discovered Lucas Fuel Additive, which over a hundred people gave 5 stars to on Amazon reviews, many reporting that it boosted mileage by 10%, especially in older cars. Lucas claims that it eliminates the need for premium fuel, but it more seems to me that my 945T was designed to be most efficient at a certain higher octane rating; isn't it true that some countries far exceed our maximum octane of 91? (seem to remember some european contributor to this site talking about 98 octane!!)

Well I've used it for the last 4 tanks full, and have noticed a definite improvement. I got 20mpg in a batch of mixed city driving, including driving up steep and windy Mt. Tamalpais. I averaged 23 mpg on hilly mountain highway driving in northern California on the 101, mostly at 70mph. I'm guessing that if I drove between 60-65 on a flatter highway I could get 25mpg (keeping 70 mpg up some of the hilly grades required the turbo to be boosting for long stretches of time!)

Just wanted to let other 940 drivers know.

You can buy Lucas Fuel Treatment on Amazon for 22 bucks a gallon--enough for 30 tanks full or so. Totally more than pays for itself.
