All,
Recently swapped to LH2.2 in my KJet 1981 244, and seemed to have pretty decent success with the conversion. As a disclaimer, I pulled a 760T harness, and am using a turbo 541 ECU as well as a 117 EZK from the same car. As far as I'm aware, my harness surgery was flawless and does not have any problems. Car ran well for a while, aside from a few initial vacuum leaks. That said, all was not well in Whoville for long... Car started to act funny, and nearly left me stranded a few times in the last few weeks.
So here's the symptoms...
--Periodically, the car will not start when hot. I can sit there and crank it for a solid 10-15 seconds until it just seems to barely catch. Takes a lot of continued cranking while tapping the throttle to bring it to life, and it BARELY makes it at that.
--Car smells rich, and fuel economy is not that great in town. Still pulls about 25mpg highway, but when you come to a stop, you can really smell it.
--Sometimes the idle surges, and sometimes it does not. Periods when the idle surges almost always coincides with the no-start condition when hot. Does not surge when on the throttle - only when off the throttle. Suggests to me that the TPS is working quite well.
Thoughts and things I've tried...
I've checked a few of the basics... FPR is fine, and the fuel pump seems fine. Fuel pump was A-OK prior to the switch, and I highly doubt it is not doing its job. Interestingly, when the car is hot and will *not* start, the only way I've found I am able to start the car is to open the throttle plate quite a bit with the adjustment screw, and reset the TPS to match. The car will then start, but still surges like a madman and still smells rich. When I go back to the car later, and set the idle by the book's procedure, 1/4turn on the screw from throttle plate closed etc... it idles very low... ~400-500rpm. Rock steady there all day long, but low. It runs fine for a while, with no surging idle, but eventually the surging starts again, and the no-start follows right afterward.
I tested the CTS prior to installation, and all of the resistance readings at ~0, 20, and 100C aligning pretty damned close to the Bosch chart showing resistance values for a given temperature.
I also tested the IAC with 12V, and it *seemed* ok. Cleaned it out, and clunks nicely now in my hand when flipping it around.
So.. I'm not entirely sure where to go from here. Intermittent problems are not fun to address, and that makes me lean toward some sort of electrical issue... Aside from the periodic no hot starting, idle surging, and rich smell at idle, it runs great. No loss of power or anything of the sort... I haven't adjusted the mixture on the AMM, but would excessive richness make a drastic change resulting in the no start? It doesn't quite explain the surging, either.
Suggestions? Dead ECU idle circuit? Throw 'em at me.
