Allo everybody.
I've got my old(er than me) 1981 suzuki gs650gl (air cooled 4-stroke) almost back on the road. Got the valves adjusted (and learned a sweet trick to swapping out valve shims involving zip-ties). Replaced a few things.
I'm waiting to spend $120 on new intake boots because I'm still in college. Nobody on the other forum I'm on will shut up about them, despite the fact that I quite adequately sealed them with high-temp silicone. Not a permanent fix by any means, but it's almost time to quit riding here and I've been out on it about two times so far.
Anyway, the bike has a high idle. I have yet to "synchronize" the vacuum between the FOUR carburetors the bike has (crazy). I'd been using starting fluid to check for leaks, but 1) That's explosive/inflammable and 2) It stinks to high heaven and will raise the idle... but maybe not noticeably at 1700rpm.
Is there a better method to find air leaks? Could I spray water mixed with something onto the spots that may be leaking? Someone suggested soapy water as it will give off a whitish smoke.
Cheers!
