Susan's 940 Issues, Learning Curves, and Posting to Threads 900

Hi Guys, I'm starting over in a new thread with a status update and concerns. I've added a lot of info just to be thorough. I originally posted this in reply to a post to Bruce, but it may have been lost, which is why it's addressed to Bruce (lucid):

Hi Bruce!

I just found this post, as I too was getting lost in this long conversation. I have posted in the past on Brickboard with other 240 issues, but they've never been as long as this one. I thought I was answering all posts on here and was primarily responding to what I got via e-mail. I did not see many of the posts in my e-mail stream. So I thought I'd expand the threads to see them one by one and found the others. So I gather that you are correct about not getting my attention because I'm not grasping the sequence logic. If you or anyone else on here could give me some insight on the best way to post and when to start a new thread, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Here's where I am now:

1. I replaced the CPS because I was told it came up in a code. Once I found the CPS, it took no time at all to replace it.

2. I replaced the battery. I had the old one checked and "dead cells" came up in the diagnostic.

3. I bought a spark plug socket so that I could check the spark and for wet plugs.

4. I bought a multimeter so that I could test other things.

5. I checked socket 2 codes on the on-board diagnostic and got 132 and 223 codes. I cleared these codes because that's what the second part of the instructions said to do (or else that's how I read it). Now I get a 111 code. I did not do Diagnostic Test Mode 2 because I couldn't understand the language. I did not check socket 6, and maybe I should.

6. I have a Chilton's manual for 200, 700, 900 cars (all in one) that I've had for years. I find it tough to follow it. I would like to get another manual that's easy to follow. I've been told how good Bentley books are, but I see that they're primarily for 200s.

7. I would like to find somewhere that has a picture of everything under the hood with little lines showing what is what. Any thoughts where I could find something like that?

8. I would like to clean up my coil contacts as you've suggested, and I'm wondering if you could supply step-by-step instructions as well as what to use as a cleaning agent. I haven't yet gotten through all these posts, so if you explained it later, please know that I'll see it as I move down the long list. The only thing that I've seen so far is your post from Sunday September 15 at 8:21 CST with "Susan said," "Jerry said," and the three photos

9. I would like to clean my flame trap (if there is one on a 940) and the throttle bearing.

10. I'm going to switch out RSR with the cooling fan relay to see if the RSR could be an issue. ALSO, my "main relay" was replaced on my 240 wagon that had starting issues. When someone uses the phrase "replaced the main relay," to what is this referring? Fuel pump relay?

11. I'm not afraid of tackling the distributor if I have to. I do have my 1990 240 sedan as a backup car (actually, I guess I still really only have one car since the 940 isn't running).

12. Most important, although I am a novice, I'm very much ready and willing to learn. I worked on other cars years ago and even put a transmission in a 4-speed Toyota by following a Chilton's manual. To get it in, a girlfriend got in the car with a big chain and put it around the back of the transmission and up through the place where the shifter was while I was underneath and lining it up. It took 2 weeks, but the installation was a success. I was 18 then and am 52 now, so I've had a few years away from working on cars. Now that my son has moved to Phoenix, I'd like my hobby to be truly taking ownership of my beloved Volvos and fix them myself. I've learned so much in the past few days just by talking to you guys, and I am so grateful.

Thanks much!

Susan
