Rear seat belt retractors. Repair or replace? 200 1980

Hey guys.

I have got to get the rear seat belt retractors fixed in my 1980 242. The belts lock properly, but the springs that retract the belts have (presumably) popped out, though I cannot say for certain, because I have not pulled them out to inspect them yet for fear of screwing them up and rendering the back seat useless. Has anyone had good luck repairing these retractors themselves, or having them professionally rebuilt, or replaced?

This topic seems to be hard to get a straight answer to on the Internet.
