Volvo 240 1991; 149,500 miles.

I'm on a cross-country road trip and am currently in Minneapolis. So far, I've driven about 1,000 miles (from Burlington, VT). I've spent time in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Detroit, Ann Arbor, Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and now Minneapolis. It's been quite an adventure. My 240 has been running great. At my last fill up, I calculated the mpg to be 28 and that is with my bike atop the car (that I unfortunately locked to the rack and now, can't find the key--but that is another problem).

On my way from Madison to Minneapolis, the check engine light came on. I got a 1-2-3 code indicating a problem with the coolant temp sensor. I'll be in Minneapolis for one more day and then will be leaving for the Badlands and then to Colorado. Is this an urgent problem, or can I continue to drive it and order the part and have it sent to a friend in Denver and replace the temp sensor there)? I saw in the Bentley manual that I can run a test for the coolant temp sensor, but how do I know what the temperature is at when I am measuring the ohms (I'm pretty sure I brought my multimeter with me)?
