carb needles and idling 444-544

hi everyone, i have a 64 544 with a b18d that was rebuilt two years ago,boared 20 over,new d cam, rebuilt carbs and rebuilt head. i never was satisfied with how it idled but the motor ran very good.i started investigating and found that it had KN needles so i decided to switch them with another set of ZH i had.while trying to tune them i found that they idle perfect with the jets turned all the way up so i turned them about one turn down and drove it a few miles and seem to do ok. whats going on? thanks, mike
