1994 Turbo 940 won't stay running.

So the cold snap made my car start doing weird things. If I put a charger across the battery I can keep it running, but it has no throttle response. If I disconnect the charger it dies immediately. So my first reaction is a bad alternator but the light doesn't light indicating a problem. It does light when I turn the key, but not while it's running. I'm charging the battery to full and will do some checks, but would a bad alternator affect throttle response? Or am I dealing with two separate issues?
Thanks
Chuck Jaxel
