Keep blowing up clocks 700 1990

I've gone through 3-4 clocks in the last 9-10 years.

Here's what happens:
The clock works fine for a while. Then it starts losing time - an hour or two here and there. Most of the time it works. Then suddenly it gets worse. Then the time adjustment knob stops working and (as far as I can tell) the clock goes back to working fine.
My guess is the time adjustment knob is responsible for all the trouble - the losing time and all.

So, my question is am I the only one? Is there something I can lubricate to keep it working?
