97 960 trans shift is hunting 900 1997

I have a 97 960 with 95000 miles (155,000 Kilometers)on it. Recently while cruising (i.e. not accelerating) in a 70kph zone the transmission seems to be hunting for a gear. I can feel a gentle bump as it seems to shift from 3 to 4 and back again, repetitively. maybe two or three times a minute. There is a barely perceptible tick in rpm fluctuation as it happens. Not sure if this could be the torque lockup switching on and off, or the transmission shifting gears.
I read in the FAQ that it may possibly be a TPS heading south, and that one way to determine if this is the case is to disconnect the TPS and drive it. Question: will the car even run with the TPS disconnected?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks as always
JD
