Painting a coffin hood grille 200 1985

I have a '85 240 with the coffin hood style grille with the chrome version vertical slats that's in beautiful condition. But, I like the version with the slats that are black with the surround in chrome. If I were to remove the slash and emblem, mask the chrome surround and spray paint the vertical slats then reinstall the slash/emblem, is that what the regular style already in black are?
I just don't want it to end up looking like a freak if that's not the way it's supposed to look like. Thanks.
