Overdrive not working -no 4th gear 200 1983

Hey guys, the overdrive on my '83 245 wagon (automatic) has stopped working properly. The indicator light on the dash does not come on and there is no 4th gear. When this first occurred, I installed a spare overdrive relay and the problem was solved, but only for a short time. I had another spare, installed it, and the same thing happened. It also only worked for a short time, making me think that an anomaly is causing the relays to fail. Any thoughts out there as to what could be causing this and how to solve my problem? Could it be caused by a faulty wire from the shifter to the solenoid? Thanks ahead for helpful input - Jim
