I have some cars (1 mine) with non-working odometers; I have ~10 spare clusters. I've been reflowing the solder on the 3 motor joints, blowing out with air, and trying each one with a new odometer gear set. So far, 3 work well, one works some (has a bad drive gear on the trip wheel - 1st I've seen). 2 may have been fried by the PO by connecting the tach wire (I'd written a note with them). On another I noticed that the small odo gear was upside down - it hit on the solder joint and wouldn't turn. perhaps this burns out motors?
I want to clarify interchange 1986-93. Samuels' list below is complete, it looks like there are 3 groups:
- 1986-89 (1986-87 lack service-light reset)
- 1990-91 (ECU in >= 1990 cars gets speed signal from speedo head.)
- 1992-93 (but a wire swap will let you interchange 90-91 with these?)
Yama wrote: "Do you have ABS? If yes then you need a post 91 speedo or no then you need a pre 91." Does this mean that all ABS speedo heads interchange? One of the cars is a 1991 ABS and I have a working 1992 ABS head. I thought all 1990-91s interchanged, ABS or not.
Speedo heads are date-stamped but boards aren't. All of the early boards have the female spade on the back near the clock. I thought this was for the service reset (88-up) but the plastic head cups on these boards don't have a slot for that. All boards 86-89 are the same but the housing is market-specific?
("Interchange" assumes you can work around the warning lights and the service-light lever eg. I put an 88 speedo head into an 86 board by drilling a hole for the reset lever in the back of the odo cup. And it's trivial to swap warning-light decals.)
Below I have excerpts from comments by Art Benstein, David Samuels, Yama (link to full threads at bottom).
----------------------------------------
"Will '87 cluster work in my 1990?"
David Samuels: ... "I categorize as follows:
86, 87 (no service reset) and 88 (rear service reset) all compatible
89 (2.4, rear service reset, halogen bulbs 1st year, #2 light lug)
90(2.4, SRS, front serv reset, halogen, no #2 light lug) 91 (+#2 light lug)
92-93 ABS (41062/39200-SRS, ABS, Front reset, four pin brd, halogen, #2 lug)
I will do an 89 cluster for installation in 90/91 but only with disclaimer about the service reset (which I disable due to no front reset) and SRS. The SRS ECU will indeed store an error if the cluster connection is not correct. I can't say if the system is not active, but I'd bet not.
Art Benstein ... "The '90 is an SRS car, so you will lose the airbag warning light with an 87 cluster. Other wiring is different too, because the ECU in your 90 gets vehicle speed info from the speedometer.
Yama: Do you have ABS? If yes then you need a post 91 speedo or no then you need a pre 91.
