Alternator Belt Connection requirements 900 1992

My question is: On 1992 Volvo,940 Turbo; Does the alternator belt connect to the AC Compressor? Is a working compressor needed for the belt to work? The compressor was not working for 8 years, recently the belt broke and mechanic repair shop insisted on replacing compressor. Please any help would be appreciated. Thanks J
