'96 960 fuel gauge fluctuation 900 1996

The fuel gauge on my '96 960 has worked perfectly for years. Last week it started fluctuating. This is apparently temp related because when the car's been turned off for a while, then restarted, the gauge works ok for a few minutes, then drops to almost empty, then later it may go back up. Is there a component that I can work around (like the 240 temp gauge problems) or another solution to the problem? Thanks.
