'91 245 NO Charge Alternator Issues NEED ADVISE "ELECTRICAL' 200

A few months past I noticed that my alternator must have ceased charging so on a temp basis I started using a small trickle charger at night.

Then I finally got under and took off the ALT to determine that the regulator brush set was low so I replaced the unit and it was charging OK or so so due to loose worn belts. I continued with the trickle charger (Sears Craftsman digital readout) but the MADE IN CHINA CRAFTSMAN power and battery connection leads were made of CRAP and Frayed and due to my lack of attention the frayed power leads touched the battery connections and Sparks flew. NO charging at all now so I guess I fied the diodes.

If the Voltage regulator brush set is replaced will that solve this or are the diodes in the Alt housing and not with the removable Volt regulator module?

On another note: I got another ALT from a PNP same code but it has a heavy blue ground wire to the Alt. frame where mine has NO ground wire? Should I make a ground wire and where is the correct placement on the block or does it matter?

Thanks as always
