fender welting: vinyl or plastic? 444-544

Hello Gents,
A P.O. used some kind of firehose-looking material as fender welting on my '59 445 (it actually looks like the same material used as to seal the hood to the cowl). So, I'm contemplating installing the correct fender welting material.
When I check VP's site they have 2 difference types of fender welting, one is vinyl , and, the other is plastic. Does anyone know why? Is one "stock" and the other an "improvement" or just another alternative material, and if so, why?
i only want to do this once..... :)
