for laughs and giggles 200

i wanted to see what a large mileage 240 engine looked like on the inside.

a parts car came my way showing 490,000 miles on an original (according to the owner) broken odometer.

the car is gone a few months now but today i finally got the engine on a stand and after draining the oil and removing the pan wanted to see what the crank shaft looked like as well as the main and rod bearings.

as far as i can tell these are original bearings. the crank measures up to new book specs in journal diameter so it has never been cut. i did not check runout!

after plastigauging all 5 mains and all 4 rods the readings that came back astonished me.

each of the rod bearings showed between 20 and 22 000's. the mains were better than that... showing all 20-21 000's. there was on mains 2, 3 and 4 slight burnishing 1/16" either side of center on the crank shaft and barely discernible on the bearing surface. the others were shiny. no scoring on anythings.

opinions as to why the burnishing? i have never driven or run this car and it sat for 3 years before it came to me.

these are essentially new specs.
