I have had this problem of the 1990 740 Turbo missing and hesitation when accelerating through the gears - and then it runs and drives OK but not great. The idle is OK at 750 mostly but falls very low to say 350 when coming to a stop and then gets back up to 750. It will drive but lacks power - I think mostly due to no boost from turbo, which I have just observed.

The turbo needle moves but will not go into the orange boost area.

Any thoughts?

I am reading the FAQ section but the turbo not boosting I have just noticed and not sure how to factor this in.

Is the turbo the problem of the bad running or is the turbo not boosting a sympton of something else.
