External fuel pump wiring 200 1988

I installed a Airtex external fuel pump in my 1988 wagon and had to cut off the wiring plugs and add the screw down type. I hope the water won't short out or corrode these fittings. Anyhow, one wire is black and one is white. Does it matter which goes to which terminal? Thanks, Larry
