fuel gauge sending unit 200 1992

I replaced my in-tank pump and put in a new sending unit. when I first installed it I had a full tank but the gauge only regestered 1/2 tank. after a couple days it moved up to about 2/3 and stayed there. I watched my milage and filled the tank when empty, the gauge went nearly to full, but will not come down. my tank is now nearly empty but gauge still reads almost full. it does go to empty when ignition is off. I suspect the new sending unit, but was wondering if anybody else has had this happen and if so what should I look for?
