front pad spring clip in backwards? 200 1991

I'm replacing a stuck caliper and as an afterthought checked my "before" picture to make sure everything was proper before putting the wheel back on. I noticed either I put the retaining clip on backwards on the new caliper or the last guy got it backwards. (The last guy might have been me years ago, the car never gets driven anymore, hence the stuck caliper.)

Which is right, spring on the outboard side of the pads or inboard or does it matter?
