240 wagon (1992) Random non starting madness

Hi, earlier this summer I went to start my '92 240 wagon and it turned over (cranked) but wouldn't catch (start). Then it started a few hours later. This happened several times on and off till I decided to have it checked out. My mechanic was on vacation so I took it to my previous mechanic. He offered to replace the fuel pump at no charge and and said if it happens again, he'd send it back and go from there. Well, it did. He put the old fuel pump back in and after a lot of searching he said discovered that there was a problem with the computer sending a constant electronic signal to the fuel pump relay which burned it out. So he bypassed the computer and replaced the fuel pump relay (rather than replacing the computer) for a very reasonable $150 for everything. He said this was fine. In any case, it had been starting no problem for about a month. Fast forward to last week...I went out of town for 5 days and when I got back and tried to start in Monday (yesterday) it wouldn't start again. I had heard that it had rained a lot so I tried taking off the distributor cap and wiping it out. No dice. By this time the battery was dead from trying to start it so I tried jumping it. No dice. I called AAA and after the driver tried jumping it again I had it towed to my regular mechanic. Guess what? IT STARTED RIGHT UP (after he charged the battery)!!!! WTF?! he said he tried 10 times in a row. He did find a frayed wire that was causing the engine to misfire which he fixed. But there was no problem with spark, fuel, the relays, etc...everything checked out. He still has the car says he's gonna make sure it starts up and take it for a test drive, but I'm kind of at my wits' end... Can anyone shed any light? Thanks....
