Tailgate wires!... 200 1990

So I'm getting the courage to fix the ground wires on BOTH sides of the car's tailgate hinges.

I originally thought it was just the passenger's side that was frayed, but upon further inspection, it's both sides.. Looks like someone tried fixing it once, and very poorly..

I guess why I'm hesitating is, the weight of the tailgate and just being one person, I'm not sure how to go about it.

Now, I've got a barn with a rafter I can tie a rope to, and support the tailgate, but it still scares me. I'm thinking I've got to 1st take the hinges off, place the tailgate down on the floor out of the way, and figure out a way to fix these wires.

I just splurged on a decent soldering gun, got some wire and heat shrink. But, do I try and fix that broken wire, or just put a new ground in?

I'm worried I'll get the tailgate down and get stuck. But I'm getting sick of the weird rpms (from power dips) and pressing the brake and getting the defroster stuck on.

I suppose any encouragement will help. It's getting colder out there, and I don't want to be messing with it in -40 deg weather... Is there a way to do it w/out ripping into the hinges?

thanks, borkski III
