First of all I want to acknowledge two posters who discovered that Bentleys does not cover gasket replacement on the 1987 and later m47 transmission. Volvo replaced the straight roller bearing with a stronger tapered roller bearing in the m47(2). My situation is that I cannot get the operating sleeve to snap over the synchronizer hub for final assembly. I have found the detents inside the operating sleeve for the "dogs". If this were a straight bearing I could just install the countershaft extension and put the housing on seperately as the last step. With the tapered roller bearing the countershaft extension and housing must be installed together. I laid the operating sleeve inside the fork with the transmission resting bellhousing down supported on 2x4s. The sliding keys or "dogs" are under spring tension when installed. With the extension housing off I have been able to snap the operating sleeve over he synchronizer hub without much trouble . I have applied my whole body weight to snap the operating sleeve over the synchronizer hub. Nothing. I have gotten as close as the line up pins but the last half inch won't give. I'm sure this is hard to understand even if you have successfully done this gasket replacement. Have to wonder why Volvo did not source a true five speed manual transmission from Japan as with the automatic. Thanks to any and all.
