940 se independant rear suspension question 900

I need a little help understanding how the rear axle locks into posi. when one wheel spins. I was parked on a steep hill and as I very gently pulled away the right rear wheel lost traction in a spot of mud. I let off the throttle even more so as to gain traction and it worked. After going 50 feet very slowly I made a left turn and realized the axle seemed to be locked into positive traction making the car feel like it did not want to make the turn without jerking. After making the turn, I drove 30 feet forward and then backed up 10 feet. I then made a right turn and I felt a bump in the rear axle and every thing seemed fine afterwards. Thanks for any help. Larry
