overdrive button nonfunctional 900 1991

I noticed today that the shifter mounted OD button (91 940T) is intermittently non functional. The transmission stays in OD, but pushing the button repeatedly had no effect for a few minutes, then became functional again, then again nonfunctional after another few moments. Is this a fault with the harness to the trans, the button itself or something else entirely?
