A/C compressor clutch won't engage '85 245 200 1985

Recently acquired a nice 1985 245 whose a/c had already been retrofitted to the R134a version. I recharged the system from vacuum, but it never cycled the compressor on. I've checked the wiring to the compressor, the fuse and replaced the a/c relay with another, still no go. Could this be the compressor clutch itself being worn out no engaging? What's the next stop short of taking it to the a/c shop? Thanks in advance.
