I am in the process of trying to remove the cylinder head on my 1995 940. There is anti-freeze inside number one cylinder so I obviously have either a blown head gasket, a crack in the cylinder head or a crack in the block.
I have both intake and exhaust manifolds unbolted and have tried to move them back away from the head. I can clear the studs at the front in both cases but cannot get either over the stud ends at the rear of the engine. I have also removed the nuts holding the exhaust pipe to the manifold
I did remove a bolt holding the exhaust to the transmission but this did not seem to make a lot of difference. I am now considering unbolting the two cooling lines that go from the radiator to the transmission and which are also bolted to the exhaust. I can't seem to get much movement from the exhaust system at all and am considering how I can unbuckle the exhaust enough to allow for it to drop about an inch or two. This would free up the exhaust manifold so that it could be removed.
I could then pull the head and find out what is holding the aft end of the intake manifold. Probably a hose of some kind or another. I have already separated the large plastic intake hose from the fuel injection apparatus. That helped but still will not allow complete separation of the intake manifold from head.
I have used a pry bar to try to separate the exhaust manifold but cannot get it to clear the head studs.
I am about to take a look at the archives but don't expect much of a detailed description of cylinder head removal.
