Reliability/performance/maintenance of 240 and similar automatic transmissions?

In reading through many past posts to the BB I see a definite preference for manual transmissions for the 240 (I have a 5-speed '91 240 I might want to replace or supplement).

Can someone tell me why that is? Are the automatic transmissions of the late 80's and early 90's 240's not reliable or good performers? Too expensive to repair?

If so, is that also true for the 700/900 series? Does it matter which automatic transmission, or whether they are used in the sedans or wagons?

Thanks,
Keith Ostertag
