My '91 Volvo 240 died in the middle of the Triborough bridge.. 1991

Mechanic couldn't figure out what happened so just seeing if anyone has experienced this. Basically as I was driving on the bridge I heard what sounded like a large beach ball pop come from my engine, immediately the car died. Luckily I was able to coast to a shoulder. I eventually got towed off the bridge by NYPD to a gas station. I was at a quarter tank so I gave it a little more gas and still nothing, it would not turn over. So I got AAA to tow me to a mechanic. It was a three hour wait for them to look at it so I walked home. Later that day they called me and said the car started up fine and they couldn't tell what had happened. It's been fine all week, but a little worried this will happen again. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
