remove plastic trim for shifter. Shifter knob is a big fat problem. 200

1985 automatic 240. A guy wants to buy the plastic trim rectangle that mounts on the tunnel and has the gear display to the side of the stick. I have already removed from a parts car the shifter with attached linkage and the starter safety switch enclosed in a big metal cup. The plastic trim piece comes off the tunnel with all of the aforementioned. Is there a way to remove the shifter knob from its shaft so I can lift off the plastic trim? Or do I have to disassemble the linkage then pull the skinny end of the shifter shaft apart from the rest? I'd have to first remove the starter safety switch and keep going from there - lots of disassemble work just to replace a broken plastic trim gear display.
