Exhaust Woes 200

Hello Bricksters,

Today I replaced my rusty Starla over the axle exhaust with a replacement Starla. First I installed the first muffler that fits into the cat. After monkeying around with the first to second exhaust pipe, and having great difficulty attempting to fit it into the first muffler, I realized that I must have a replacement that's an under the axle model. However, when installed, and using new hanger donuts on the first muffler and new rubber hangers on the second, it touches the underside of the axle and no adjustment or pipe twisting will ever permit some space to develop.

Under these circumstances, does anyone have any ideas for some type of means to isolate the two pipes. I've previously replaced these mufflers over the last 11 years but I don't remember encountering this problem.

Is it possible that my brains are so fried that it really is an over the axle model and I need to tweak the pipes?

Thanks much for any answers to this latest puzzle.
