Tachometer Problem

Yesterday, whilst enjoying a much needed day off I ran across a car at the local boneyard who had the tachometer and small clock in it. I have long wanted to install a tach into my car so I removed all the needed pieces and took it home for a whopping 20 bucks! I get home, install it all and start the car. The clock works great, but the tach does not show the car idling. It does change rpms as I drive, but not as it should. For instance, at the shift point from 1st to 2nd (in an M46) it shows about 1100 rpm. I know that is not the case. Has anyone encountered this problem before? If I got a bad tach, it's not a total loss. I never really liked the big clock anyways, so 25 bucks at least gets me a functioning small clock, trim piece, and applicable wiring. Not too bad I don't guess.
