Towing 1800 with a V50 1800

I wanted to tow my '71 1800E to a VCOA meet with my 2008 V50, however, the V50 Owner's manual says, "No can do." Page 251 of the V50 Owner's Manual titled "Specifications" and sub-titled, "Dimensions and Weights" says, "Models equipped with the B5244S7 engine (engine code 39, which is the 6th and 7th digits from the left in your vehicle's VIN number,....), may not be used to tow trailers or vehicles of any kind. This could cause damage to the vehicle's emission control systems."

The V50 is originally from California and is an engine code 39 equipped car but it is now titled and licensed in Arizona. I know that CA has more stringent emissions requirements than AZ but I also do not know that if I choose to tow my 1800 it may ruin my emission control systems even for AZ standards. Basically I just do not understand how this can happen just by towing another car.
