I am in need of a front suspension crossmember for a 1966 122S. Does anyone have one to sell or know of a place that would. I need it ASAP. I have looked as much as I could on google etc and I have a couple of places to call Monday. But if anyone has a place to try it would be appreciated. I seem to remember in my previous parts searches that there was a place that had a picture of a bunch of crossmembers on their website but I have looked and looked and can't find it now. Please help :)
Got my first 122 a couple of months ago. I sell parts for British cars for a living and I have a bunch of MG's and Triumphs and an Austin HEaley or two. And I have worked on cars for a living too before I started selling parts.
I went to rebuild the front suspension and I was able to do the passenger side but the bolt for the lower wishbone would not come loose on the drivers side. And PB blaster and 3/4" air guns and breaker bars with 5' extensions etc only ruined the bolt. And heating and pounding it with a hammer did nothing. So I removed the crossmember and put it in a 20 ton press to press out the bolt. And I moved it 1/4" but then it would not move. And so more soaking with PB blaster etc and it would not move any further. And then I put it full force in the press and the entire crossmember crushed. I have done a lot of things to cars over the years but I have never seen anything like it. Basically the entire tube that holds the bolt moved an inch in the crossmember. So its ruined. If I had it to do over again I am not sure what I could have done differently. And the bushings were completely gone so I had to change them as the car was not fun to drive as it was. Its a terrible design in that the bolt in the tube in the crossmember is a close fit but the tube is welded in place. Most cars have something that is bolted in place to the crossmember so that it can be repaired if the suspension bends in accident damage. Maybe its stronger the way it is but it sure is a waste if the car gets hit or in this case if it can't be disassembled.
The car Is now without a crossmember and the one I have is not repairable. The car is not at all rusty either as it came from New Mexico.
